Recycling is definitely one of those initiatives that we all need to be buying into, and especially considering the way recyclables ending up in general waste is landfills and elsewhere is really something we just can\u2019t have happening. Here we are in January of a new year, and a recent article highlighted 5 recycling trends that are expected to pick up even more speed in 2025 was bound to be one that would catch our attention. Massive population growth in Ontario means more material needs to be recycled than ever before.<\/p>\n

Most people are pretty good about recognizing the 3-arrow triangle symbol that indicates something is recyclable, but it\u2019s best if they can also know what the number in the middle of it means in relation to where it\u2019s supposed to go. A quick hello to our neighbours across the water in Upstate New York, where they\u2019re working to get better at recycling too as it turns out.<\/p>\n

This is our second blog entry of the year here, and we\u2019ve been pleased about how the first month of 2025 has been a good one for our disposal mini bin rental and many of them are at job sites and residential reno properties all over this part of Ontario and as far in either direction as Peterborough or Kingston. Let\u2019s get right to those 5 trends we\u2019re going to look at, and see why each has real promise for promoting communities to better with recycling.<\/p>\n

Deep Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n

Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses neural (brain) network to simulate complex decision-making processes to develop models that are them implemented into software or other operational machinery of some sort. It is likely going to be increasingly beneficial for recycling when used for high-accuracy sorting of opaque white packaging, textiles and foils from PET as well as high-throughput, and high-purity used beverage can (UBC) aluminum recovery. It also looks like it is going to be very good for sorting tasks and expand into new segments, such as metal sorting, unlocking new levels of efficiency and sustainability in the recycling industry.<\/p>\n

This in comparison to traditional systems, which have always needed refinement and are only able to focus based on material type. Deep learning\u2019s value lies in object recognition using full-colour cameras which recognize the types of objects based on shape, size, dimensions and more.<\/p>\n

Real-Time Monitoring<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year we are likely to see more of advanced AI and cloud technologies being used to analyze waste and make better determinations about whether it can be recycled or not. This should contribute to better transparency in sorting facilities. Digital twins of sorting lines allow detailed object tracking and analysis, and with these systems operators and recyclers are better equipped to make data-driven decisions to improve output quality, prevent material loss and preempt potential disruptions.<\/p>\n

Enhanced efficiency and compliance with regulatory standards will be other benefits, and much of what would be recyclable waste is going to be caught and properly directed before it ends up going in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n

Decarbonization Through Aluminum Recycling<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the most unfortunate aspects of predominant waste disposal methods \u2013 including waste incineration \u2013 is the release of carbon into the atmosphere, and no one needs to have it explained to them why that\u2019s hugely detrimental for the world. It\u2019s for this reason that decarbonization will remain a priority in 2025, and especially for the aluminum sector in Canada.<\/p>\n

Committing to net zero targets are what many large companies are doing, and the good news is that there is growing demand for recycled aluminum and high-quality feedstock for aluminum composite material products. Using recycled aluminum yields significant CO2 savings compared to other materials.<\/p>\n

All of this has led to the concept of \u2018green\u2019 aluminum involving increased aluminum sorting and greater granularity, such as separating aluminum alloys into high-purity fractions. That\u2019s made possible with LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) technology.<\/p>\n

Focus on Lesser-Known Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n

We can also expect to see better and more far-reach recycling of other material streams is in 2025. One good example is with wood sorting technologies for better recycling of wood scraps that would otherwise end up being channeled along with regular trash. What\u2019s possible now is the production of recycled materials matching the quality of virgin raw materials. Processed and unprocessed wood can be separated and medium-density fiberboard recovered efficiently.<\/p>\n

Similar advancements in textile recycling are coming along nicely too and will also be set for larger-scale adoption in either this year or next across North America, and hopefully we see the same implementations happening here in Canada. We all really stand to benefit from better waste management, and better and more extensive recycling of materials to go along with it.<\/p>\n
