So the only option is to find ways to get better with waste management and disposal. So this news about massive gains in International trash is exactly what catches our attention.<\/p>\n

What we\u2019re talking about here is a new report from the World Bank that shows that efforts to curb waste production taken on by all countries around the world haven\u2019t had a whole lot of success. It\u2019s not for a lack of effort, and we can all appreciate how much of a challenge this is for them. Especially considering how ever-greater numbers of people worldwide are living a first-world carbon-intensive lifestyle with excessive consumerism.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not something that will get tied into any discussion of a household waste removal service<\/a> with disposal bin rental, but service providers are seeing the increase too – bigger and bigger loads of waste being created at home renovation sites or home demolitions. That\u2019s a reflection of the way building trends over decades have been more material-use heavy too. Enough with the promotion though, let\u2019s get right to look at this topic and the report in more detail.<\/p>\n

Exceeding Pace<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This new World Bank Report is telling us that global waste generation is rising faster than previously projected. The original expectation laid out in a 2018 report projected that the world would generate 2.59 billion tonnes of waste by 2030. But as of 4 years ago we\u2019d already predicted 2.56 billion tonnes. And global waste generation is expected to grow from 2.56 billion tonnes in 2022 to 3.86 billion tonnes by 2050, which works out to a 50% increase.<\/p>\n

Low-income countries are where the greatest increases are going to be seen, and that\u2019s unfortunate because they have less of the means of addressing the problem effectively. The fastest growth is foreseen to be in Sub-Saharan Africa and in South Asian countries, but overall it is the rich countries that are producing higher levels of waste at ongoing high levels over decades now.<\/p>\n

High-income countries that make up 16% of the global population have been producing 29% of the world\u2019s waste right up to the time of the study and they have the highest per capita waste generation. Upper-middle-income countries produced the largest share of global waste – 42% of it. In contrast lower-income countries that make up 40% of the global population only produced 25% of the total waste seen worldwide, but their share is increasing in a big way each year.<\/p>\n

Regionally, East Asia and the Pacific generated the largest share of global waste at 33%, while the Middle East and North Africa produced the least – just 6%<\/p>\n

Waste <\/strong>Types Matter<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Not all waste is the same, and we can attest to that with dumpster rentals for Campbellford or Castleton here on the Eastern side of the Province and not far from Peterborough. Most municipal waste anywhere in the world is going to be food and garden waste. In those low-income countries that is making up 52% of the total waste generated. Higher-income countries have waste streams dominated by dry recyclable materials, textiles, and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), which together make up around 50% of their municipal waste.<\/p>\n

Plastics constitute approximately 12.5 percent of municipal solid waste globally, with the proportion ranging from 8.1 percent in low-income countries to 13.1 percent in upper-middle-income countries. Single-use plastics are estimated at 65 percent of all municipal solid waste plastics generated worldwide each year.<\/p>\n

The upside to all of this is that collection rates have improved alongside this trend to meet the need as humanity produces more waste in step with population growth. High- and upper-middle-income countries continue to have high collection rates, with high-income regions such as North America reporting rates close to 100 percent and upper-middle-income countries reaching about 89 percent.<\/p>\n

Lower-middle-income countries are now doing better at least, and the reports suggested that these countries now collect 61%. But the lowest-income countries collect only 28% of their waste. It\u2019s here that international regulatory agencies really need to start tightening the screws on these guys and seeing to it they start pulling their weight and doing what\u2019s necessary to protect the environment globally. Thorough and effective waste collection and processing is an absolute need for all countries and all people now.<\/p>\n

The study concluded by suggesting that a high-ambition scenario is going to be best, which will involve waste generation being capped at prevailing levels, despite ongoing population and economic growth. The suggestion there is that this can be achieved through a combination of targeted interventions and improved waste management practices. The low-ambition scenario represents a middle path, achieving half the reduction of the high-ambition scenario, with global waste reaching 3.12 billion tonnes in 2050.<\/p>\n
