Comparatively speaking Canada does quite well with responsible handling of waste materials and recycling as much of them as possible. But there’s still room for improvement and that’s the belief that is resounding here in our Province too, as a recent study conducted in January of this year has found that most people living in Ontario believe stronger and more immediate action should be taken to improve waste diversion and disposal practices.
Much of this may be because some of Canada’s largest cities are found in this Province, and it is true that waste management is increasingly challenging from municipalities in Toronto, Hamilton, and Ottawa. That can probably apply for any municipality in the densely-populated Golden Horseshoe area, and while we are a good ways East of their we imagine people feel the same way here. Our expertise is always going to be with dumpster rentals for Trenton and Colborne residents but there a folks in the same professional sphere that have been doing really well with leading the charge towards maximizing recycling and handling waste better.
Many of those gains have been attributable to technology. But some of the working fixes have more simply involved changing their understanding of the challenge, and coming at it from a different angle based on those new understandings. Successes with either approach have given increased hope for the people who did participate in the survey and reinforced their belief that while we have done well so far there really is so much to be done to keep waste from ending up landfills.
Which is something of pressing need, as there are estimates Ontario’s landfill capacity could be exhausted within the next 10 years, and that’s going to be even more problematic if the population continues to grow as it almost certainly will. The number of disposal bin rentals we send out as part of a trash and waste removal service for folks here in Colborne and Trenton won’t make a dent in the overall amount of discarded materials that end up in those landfills, but using a service like ours does give people the peace of mind in knowing that all waste collected and taken away in our bins will be disposed of properly at all times.
Let’s now turn and look at what was most noteworthy coming out of the survey. It’s good to see that so many people in our Province see the value in better waste management practices and the fact that this needs to be a priority.
Increased Waste Diversion
The study was undertaken for Nanos Research for Waste 2 Resource Ontario (W2RO) in January of this year, and the aim with it was to gauge opinions on landfills and recycling, and especially the urgency to ensure adequate landfill capacity as we move into the future and understanding the 10-year or so window we talked about earlier with how soon Ontario landfills may be maxed out.
Other parts of the survey were intended to measure the extent to which people placed importance on finding new or better ways to divert waste from landfills, increase responsibility for recycling, and promote increased levels of support for waste diversion programs and investments. This can start at ground level and with individuals too, and when you get dumpster rentals for Campbellford or Camborne you can take it on yourself to also be more mindful of what maybe shouldn’t go into the bin and be directed elsewhere as waste instead.
But the focus will always be on the big picture and the push for positive overarching trends, and the people at W2RO have reported that most participants in the survey strongly support actions that address waste diversion and disposal and ongoing trade disruptions and uncertainty add even more emphasis to their feeling this way. There is real belief that there must be continued action to build the capacity we need at home, and do it quickly.
The results also indicated that more than 80% of Ontario residents support provincial funding being made available to waste and recycling organizations. These funds would then be used to invest in equipment, infrastructure and workforce development. Which would be similar to funding made available to manufacturers in the province. More than 90% of people living in Ontario see it being urgent or somewhat urgent for governments to ensure adequate landfill capacity in the province.
Need for Increased Recycling Responsibility
76% of respondents said they believe it is important to increase targets for regulated programs to ensure the province remains best in class diverting waste from landfill. 16% of respondents had a neutral opinion, while only six percent made it clear they didn’t feel this was an important matter.
And 52% of respondents also have the belief that industrial, commercial and institutional entities should be the equals of residents when it comes to being responsible for recycling. 44% believe they should be more responsible than residents for recycling materials they handle as part of their business operations, and that the increased scale of those operations and the added volume of materials produced reinforces that belief.
The last notable finding taken from the survey results was that nearly 3/4 of Ontario residents (74%) support the notion that the provincial government should be actively investing in technologies that can convert waste into renewable energy sources. Examples of this would be electricity from recycled materials or renewable natural gas. 89% of participants would support the rollout of food and organic waste collection programs in all residential homes and multi-residential buildings.
